Marriage Car InsurancePeople that get hitched are more likely to save on their car insurance, according to DMV.org. Insurance experts believe that married people tend to be safer drivers than those operators that are single.

Changing driving habits

Some experts believe that married people take their spouses’ input about safety into consideration while driving, as well as their own. This reduction in rates could also be because some car insurance companies think spouses are more likely to make their loved ones get rid of dangerous muscle or hot rod cars, according to Edmunds.com.

Once people are married they no longer have only themselves to think about, and many do not want to leave their loved one a widow, according to the site. Experts also believe that car accidents are often the result of aggressive driving, sometimes related to relationship frustrations, Edmunds.com reports. People that are in an intimate and committed relationship may be less likely to have these feelings of aggression.

Contrary to some people’s beliefs, this type of insurance discount is perfectly legal and is not considered discrimination by the government. It is also legal to provide lower rates to women and people older than 25.

Multi-car discounts

Car insurance companies may also relate marriage to children and multiple vehicles. People can receive discounts if they have more than one car because they are less likely to be driving the vehicles as much as before, according to DMV.org. In order to qualify for these discounts, all of the vehicles must be registered under one name and can only be driven by people living under the same roof.

Furthermore, to obtain the multiple driver discount, the cars must all be insured by the same auto insurance company, the DMV reports. If a driver’s current company does not offer this discount, experts recommend shopping around for an insurance provider that does. This discount could be as high as 15 percent. This policy may also cover boats, motorcycles and recreational vehicles.

People should not try to deceive insurance companies in order to receive any of the above discounts. Insurance fraud is a serious crime, punishable by fines and jail time. Auto insurance fraud costs companies and their customers billions of dollars each year, through false claims and increased rates.
