OnStar's remote assistance and emergency aid system provided unique new options to car owners when it was launched over a decade ago. Late last month, however, the service was integrated with Android and iPhone OS mobile devices to provide further new features, according to an announcement from the company.
The applications, known as myChevrolet and OnStar MyLink, allow users to find their parking space, unlock their car, and even search their owner's manual from their smartphone. Users can also include their own notes about a parking space or set a reminder for how much time they have left on the meter, the company said. Chevrolet marketing vice president Chris Perry said that "this is a great example of how we are focusing on smart technologies that address customers' needs."
The new applications also give users the ability to request roadside assistance or locate the nearest available dealership for a maintenance appointment. To help determine if such an appointment is necessary, the apps can provide users with up-to-date information on the vehicle's fuel status, tire pressure, and any warning indicators that are active. These helpful alerts could help drivers maintain their cars better and realize savings on car insurance, experts say.
Android or iPhone OS smartphone users can also lock or unlock their doors from their phone, and even start their vehicle's engine remotely. While OnStar service itself requires specialized equipment and a monthly subscription fee, the additional smartphone apps are available at no charge. Experts warn, however, that it is a serious safety hazard to use a smartphone while driving, and the apps should not be used unless the car has come to a complete stop.
